Agritourism in Russia

Ethnographic and rural tourism promises to be one of the most popular destinations in Russia in the near future. Indeed, scores of different ethnic groups and nationalities live in this country, each with its unique way of farming, a set of crafts and cultural artefacts. From the far north to the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus, from Kaliningrad to Kamchatka - virtually every rural corner of Russia has its own special traditions and ceremonies.

Currently, it is difficult to name Russia a country where a rural recreation experineces high popularity. Agritourism in Russia has just begun to develop. Among the most famous regions of rural tourism in Russia can be considered Karelia and the Leningrad Region, villages on the shores of Lake Ladoga and Onega, Arkhangelsk region with Pomors fishing settlements on the White Sea, the Kuban and Kozatski page, Volga, as well as some regions of Siberia, where at the first place you can put the Altai. What regards other regions, including the famous resorts of the Caucasus, such as Sochi or Mineral Water, they are now focusing on the development of traditional forms of tourism such as leisure hotel and tourist camps, so it is really difficult to find a decent option for agritourism in these regions.

Cognitive and ethnographic tourism in Russia is developed better. Farms near Moscow, the famous museum of wooden architecture - Kizhi in Karelia, numerous museums and parks of great Russian writers: Alexander Pushkin (Museum-Reserve near St. Petersburg), Mikhail Lermontov (writer’s reserve in Pyatigorsk), Leo Tolstoy (Homestead Yasnaya Polyana in the Tula region) accept tourists year-round. In addition, Russia has a number of special cultural spaces, which are difficult to give an unambiguous definition. For example – Homestead of Santa Claus in Veliky Ustyug. This is an ethnographic museum, entertainment center and a cultural phenomenon, a Russian analog of the residence of Santa Claus in Lapland.

In the Agritourism in Russia column, we will publish news about the recreation in the rural areas of Russia, new facilities, as well as tourist destinations, such as eco-tourism, hunting tourism, fishing tourism and others. We try to tell tourists that the recreation in Russia can be truly unconventional and bright.
